Marriage Rights

My heterosexual marriage hasn’t been adversely affected tonight. And no one’s married a box turtle. So far so good.

If conservatives are right about recognition of same sex relationships then Facebook will soon let you set your relationship status to Married to Box Turtle. We’ll soon see just how slippery that slope is.

What we think of as traditional marriage is not universal. The default family arrangement in many cultures, modern as well as ancient, has been polygamy, not monogamy. The default mode of child-rearing is often communal, rather than two parents nurturing their biological children.

The point of this ideal is not that other relationships have no value, or that only nuclear families can rear children successfully. Rather, it s that lifelong heterosexual monogamy at its best can offer something distinctive and remarkable a microcosm of civilization, and an organic connection between human generations that makes it worthy of distinctive recognition and support.

So this is a conservative case against marriage rights is to recognize traditional marriage as social engineering and is worthy of support because of the pretty genealogy diagrams? Huh? I wonder if Mr. Douthat would support asexual reproduction because you can use Venn Diagrams for genealogy. I generally like Mr. Douthat’s column but this is really an awful argument in what is his worst column of the year.

Yet another GOP gay sex scandel

Several bloggers were posting pictures of me and Coulter together and noting, gleefully, that the guy with his arm around the waist of the woman who called Edwards a faggot had, once upon a time, acted in adult films. Some of the sites were comparing me to Rich Merritt, a Marine Corps captain who appeared in gay films. Others were comparing me to Jeff Gannon and claiming that I too had advertised my services as a male escort. I won’t deny it, or that I acted in several adult movies 15 years ago under names like Pierre LaBranche and Rod Majors.

Why are the Republican sex scandals, gay sex scandals? I can’t think of a single heterosexual sex scandal involving a nationally recognizable republican. Today it dawned on me that the difference between gay and strait Republicans is that the heterosexual Republicans are all married.

Free advice to the GOP: If you let gay people get married with all the benefits of marriage, your sex scandal problems might all go away.
