“This MS-13 nonsense has precisely the same structure as the racist drug war rhetoric of the crack years. Politicians would use wildly racist language to describe drug dealers, but if called on it would say “oh so you’re defending drug dealers?””Chris Hayes on Twitter
The very same census report projects that as far out as 2060, 68.5 percent of the population will be white. It’s just that a reasonably large share of the white population will be partially descended from Latin American immigrants. A further 6.2 percent of the population will belong to “two or more races,” with a large share of those likely identifying at least in part as white. The difference here is between an exclusive and inclusive definition of whiteness.via Study: overhyped media narratives about America’s fading white majority fuel anxiety
There was a time when those who were Irish, Italian and Slavic were not considered white. This is in keeping with American traditions in letting people be white over time.
it also means that any attempts to prove racial “purity” go from simply grotesque to, genetically speaking, completely absurd
This is why scientist reject the idea of a biological basis for race. It’s really fuzzy.
This is worth a read but I don’t agree 100% here. The white resentment narrative is largely about racism but not exclusively about racism.
“It was only supposed to be a white thing but people read more into it than that,” Boggess wrote on his GoFundMe page about his sign.
Right wing victim narrative.
Going back to Chris Rock’s point, the average black person’s friend network is eight percent white, but the average white person’s network is only one percent black. To put it another way: Blacks have ten times as many black friends as white friends. But white Americans have an astonishing 91 times as many white friends as black friends.
By contrast, “acting white” accusations were least common at the most segregated schools, a finding echoed by a 2006 study from Harvard economist Roland Fryer, who found “no evidence at all that getting good grades adversely affects students’ popularity” in predominantly black schools. Across schools, the general pattern was this: “Acting white” accusations weren’t attached to academic performance and rather were a function of specific behaviors. If you hung out with white kids and adopted white fashions, you were accused of “acting white.” Smart kids were teased, but no more than you’d see in any other group.
Worth a read.
Of the 3,278 prisoners, 79 percent were convicted of nonviolent, drug-related crimes such as possession or distribution, and 20 percent of nonviolent property crimes like theft.
Its mostly red-states locking blacks up for life for minor crimes. No surprise here.
>Whites who currently live in Southern counties that had high shares of slaves population in 1860 are less likely to identify as Democrat, more likely to oppose affirmative action policies, and more likely to express racial resentment toward blacks
But if you suggest racism is still a problem, or that it is a problem in the parts of the country that are southern, older and more republican you are accused of as race baiting.
Coates finds the part of the opinion where the law’s bias is explained.
But his son and progeny Rand Paul also has a close aide who is a huge racist, reports Alana Goodman. Jack Hunter, author, with Rand Paul, of The Tea Party Goes to Washington, is not just kinda bigoted in an uncomfortable, old-guy sort of way. He's a serious neo-Confederate.
Why does this keep happening?
Did Powell ask for %$#ing Ice Tea? That might explain it.
Notice a pattern?
31 Worst People On The Planet Barack Obama must be pretty happy that he’ll be president for four more years. These people are not...and they are terrible.
One thing is certain the Trayvon Martin case. The first person to suggest that this case has nothing to do with race will be what passes for a conservative pundit. Then again if there were still old school conservatives around, they would be blasting Zimmerman for being a vigilante.
Following speeches from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Rep. Michele Bachmann, CPAC is hosting the panel "The Failure of Multiculturalism: How the pursuit of diversity is weakening the American Identity" with Peter Brimelow, the founder and head of VDARE.com. VDARE is a White Nationalist website, run by Brimelow, which frequently publishes the works of anti-Semitic and racist writers.
Another one of those isolated incidents. Overt racism is now allowed at CPAC. The wiliness to excuse this has now become part of the conservative movement.
Why do they still let this man on TV?
TPM has obtained some of the threatening and racist emails that that voter registration group down in Houston received after being targeted by one Texas Tea Party group for alleged “voter fraud.” It’s about as ugly as you would expect: “The WAR is coming and we are going to dispose of each and every one of you while we take OUR (White) nation back.”
Wow, who could have guess that race war wing nuts would have found a home in the tea party? When you hear them talking about taking the country back, you really should be asking from whom?
CALLER: I’m 90 years old and I just wanted to ask the colored man, why don’t colored people instead of saying what we did to them, why don’t they say what we did for them? They talk about the slavery but since then they have been given welfare, free medicine, free everything.
HARLESTON: Ma’am I think this is more of a conversation about the relationship between the administration and the people on Wall Street and not necessarily one that’s based on race.
CALLER: Oh, okay. I’m not a racist. That was my comment. Thank you.
Wow. Assuming the caller was in fact 90, she were born in 1920. She would have been in her 40s during the civil rights era. Did she really miss the whole era between the end of slavery and the beginning of the civil rights era? Was she unaware of the culture of institutionalized racism that existed for the first half of her life? And the whole we-they thing is creepy. But she says she isn’t a racist so that makes me feel better.
On October 7, 2006, Alex Roy set out from the Classic Car Club on Hudson Street in New York City. His self-assigned mission: Beat the record for a cross-country drive to Los Angeles. That record, set in 1983, is 32 hours and 7 minutes. To achieve his goal, Roy and his copilot, Dave Maher, would need to average at least 90 miles per hour. From The Route Coast to Coast
I’m sorry, but if you aren’t riding with Dom Deluise while trying to out run Jamie Farr and a host of paper thin ethnic and social stereotypes; what’s the point?
The autonomous robotic vehicles began competing Wednesday in the first of a series of qualifying rounds at the California Speedway. Half will advance to the October 8 starting line of the so-called Grand Challenge.
